Zen has been linked to some styles of karate for many years, but it is usually

poorly understood, and quite often misrepresented, with there being a tendency

towards thinking that Zen meditation is hard concentration and confronting

your fears. Furthermore, Karate will usually be practiced in an aggressive,

militaristic way, which would contrast completely with a Buddhist view.

In my understanding, Zen practice is a method of becoming aware of your

essential nature through mindfulness and self knowledge. This can be achieved

via meditative practices focused on feelings in the body, thoughts

and emotions. As such, a Zen Karate class attempts to give people the space and

opportunity to do just that. Meditating whilst moving is basically what Zen Karate

is all about.
